Thanks for the technical reply. However, after extensive field testing on the river in a kayak this weekend, the claim that USB-C provides no advantage over USB-A for the X5 while recording is inaccurate. While the camera may lock onto standard 5V operation when powered on, old USB-A infrastructure is a blind pipe. It cannot compensate for the inherent line resistance created by a 66-inch extension cable. Over that distance, the voltage drops down to 4.6V (as your own testing meter showed). While a standard 8K30fps recording might barely survive that drop in a controlled lab, running advanced modes like Pre-recording spikes the motherboard's continuous wattage draw. That under-voltage drop causes the camera to instantly brown out, blacking out the screen and dropping the Bluetooth remote connection.Switching the power source to a native USB-C Power Delivery (PD) socket and a high-gauge, heavily shielded USB-C to USB-C cable completely eliminates this bottleneck. The internal smart chips inside a PD circuit actively monitor the load and stabilize the voltage feed over long cable runs, keeping it from dipping below the camera’s safety threshold. Upgrading the hardware pipe to native USB-C is the only way to keep 8K Pre-recording stable over a 5+ foot extension.
Also, as a quick tip for other kayak anglers trying to run this case battery-less for heat reduction: you can easily solve the open battery door weatherproofing issue by purchasing a cheap aftermarket battery, gutting the lithium cell, and sliding the empty plastic frame back into the camera. It utilizes the factory gaskets to seal the motherboard completely from river spray with zero weight or heat generation.
Case is built out of really good quality.
A few things I’d critique if I could. Since this is a case meant for plugging into external power. One of the main benefits of doing so, is that you get to remove the internal battery to help with heat reduction. Since insta360 doesn’t offer a door to close the battery compartment once removed. It would be nice if 3BR made their own. To help keep the elements out of the battery compartment.
Also it would be nice if 3BR gave you the choice to choose a USB-C to USB-C cord or a USB-A to USB-C cord at the time of purchase.
Marcus - Thanks for the review and suggestions.
Making a door for the X5 would be complicated and much to expensive for a tiny company like ours.
As for a USB-C cable, we use the USB-A plug to maintain compatibility with our patented TAPP CAPP which provides all-weather sealing when it is plugged into our TAPP USB power port.
In addition, a USB-C cable doesn't provide any advantage since the X5 does not use USB-PD once it is turned on. It only provides USB-PD fast charge when it is turned off.
